An annual event that expresses science through art to

better connect people to imperative environmental challenges of this century, such as climate change

and rising tides affecting our community in Delray Beach.

ABOUT

During this multi-day event, the City of Delray Beach and several local organizations partner so the public can watch artist discussions, see art exhibits, and hear from regional experts and City staff about climate change impacts and resilience efforts that effect our community. This event began in 2016 as a King Tide Event before growing into the annual, well-loved RISE weekend.

 

This past year, in light of the pandemic, RISE events were held online and many can still be viewed below!

Little Ones Love Our Planet Story Time (LIVE VIRTUAL PROGRAM)

Ms. Tea and our library friends shared stories, songs, movement and music to celebrate our amazing Planet Earth and to cultivate curiosity, creativity, helpfulness, problem solving and imagination. Little ones will learned how important it is to care for Planet Earth and how much friends can accomplish when they work together!

Cool Topic on a Hot Issue: Navigating Sea Level Rise (Panelist Discussion)

The League of Women Voter’s Environmental Issues Group held this panel discussion about how the effects of Climate Change impact our community (and pocketbooks!) and what our local officials are doing about it. Panelists included Kent Edwards, Sustainability Officer for the City of Delray Beach, Rebecca Harvey, Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Boynton Beach and Lindsey Nieratka, Sustainability Manager for the City of Boca Raton.

Saving Florida: Women's Fight for the Environment in the Twentieth Century

A speaker presentation with Leslie Poole, an assistant professor of environmental studies at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. A fourth-generation Floridian, Poole’s research explores the roles of women in the state’s modern conservation and environmental movements.

Climate Change Vulnerability in Southeast Florida (Panelist discussion)

Communities across Florida are adversely affected by the impacts of Climate Change. Erin Deady, P.A. and Elizabeth Perez with Collective Water Resources are conducting a study with the City of Delray Beach to assess areas of vulnerability in our city and what threats we will be facing. This panel also included Rhonda Haag, Chief Resilience Officer for Monroe County, who discussed how the Florida Keys are preparing for climate change and sea level rise.

First Friday Art Walk by the Downtown Development Authority

Viewers were able to experience the galleries, studio, and art found in the award-winning Downtown Delray Beach from the comfort of their home! Some galleries were also open during the event. For more information on this monthly event, go to downtowndelraybeach.com/ArtWalk.

Marvelous Marine Life

Deborah LaFogg Docherty, recent Artist Magazine and Pastel Journal award-winning artist, showed participants how to make underwater paintings light up in this virtual workshop! Looking at LaFogg Docherty’s work, many people think that her paintings are photographs. She takes this as a compliment since she is a photorealistic painter. This virtual workshop focused on techniques creating realistic textures, under the guidance of a pastel professional, for your favorite sea creature while raising awareness for the ever-changing effects on our marvelous marine life. 

Diving in with Sandoway

Join the Director of Education and Marine Biologist during a virtual tour of The Sandoway Discovery Center and feeding of their sharks and ocean animals. Learn about corals sharks and the need to preserve our ocean ecosystems.

Virtual discussion with Darice Machel McGuire

Darice Machel McGuire is a fine artist living on the beautiful Island of Maui. Her art works include creatures of the land and sea, Hawaii and California landscapes, and still life, in either oil or acrylic mediums. “I love studying the clouds and the shadows that play along the valley and mountains or watching the waves as they come in to caress the sandy beaches. The colors of flowers, the sky, the ocean, it all inspires me”.

Climate Kids Let's Celebrate Our Planet (Live Virtual Program)

A fun hour of games, activities, craft projects, trivia questions and information for all young Earth Warriors. Youth explored the NASA website Climate Kids, learned what they can do in our own community to help keep our planet clean and healthy, connected with other environmentally dedicated kids, laughed and had fun celebrating our planet.

Artist talk with Lauren Shapiro

Lauren Shapiro is a visual artist living and working in Miami, Florida, United States. She earned an M.F.A. from the University of Miami and utilizes a multi-step casting process in clay resulting in modular sculptures and installations which reference systems and visual orders found in nature. Her work draws inspiration from environmental research and data, ceramics and social practice.

Climate Change Teen Monologue

Climate change is one of the greatest threats to human health in history, and it effects people of all ages all over the world. Youth have begun to let their voices be heard and join the fight against climate change on a scale never seen before. Whether through education, technology, or art ─ young people in Delray Beach are expressing themselves and their passion for climate action. RISE is a unique way for our department to show south Florida residents the impact of climate change. During RISE, you will see how climate change is affecting our area, and what local communities are doing to address these challenges.
